This week's birthday includes a tale of intermarriage, my dear great-grandmother

This week's birthdays from my family tree:

Dec. 9
  • John William Kidd (my second cousin once removed on my father's side, and my granduncle in-law), b. 1885 in Rowan County, Ky.; d. Jan. 3, 1975 in Rowan County, Ky. John married his first cousin once removed, Dora Kidd, in about 1916. He was 30, and she was 21.

  • Chad Allen Williams (my fourth cousin on my mother's side)

Dec. 10
  • Lula M. Lewis (my 3G aunt), b. 1891 in Morgan County, Ky.; d. April 12, 1963. There are two Lula Lewises in my family tree, including my great-grandmother on my father's side. However, this Lula Lewis was the child of Isaac Lewis and Rhoda Templeman and the aunt of my great-grandmother, as the chart above demonstrates.

  • Mable Edith Ridhardson (my third cousin once removed on my mother's side), b. 1909; d. July 28, 1987.

Dec. 12
  • Gertrude J. Perry (my second cousin four times removed on my mother's side), 1855 in Rushcreek Township, Fairfiled County, Ohio; d. Feb. 21, 1864, in Rushcreek Township, Fairfield County, Ohio. She was one of nine children, born in a line of Wilson's on my mother's side. (There also is a line of Ohio Wilsons on my father's side.) I'm not sure about the circumstances of her death, but she passed away at age 8.

  • Aaron Levi Parker (not a blood relative, but the father-in-law of my wife's greatuncle, James Claude Ray Sr.), b. 1871 in South Carolina; d. June 13, 1937, in Rock Hill, York County, SC.

• Nora Ellen Kendall (my great-grandmother on my mother's side), b. 1889 in Rowan County, Ky.; d. May 13, 1973, in Rowan County, Ky. One day, I'm going to give my great-grandmother her own blog entry. Her life was trying, to be sure -- she lost both parents at a relatively young age, lost her first husband on Christmas Eve and spent her last years living on the Wilson family homeplace with her daughter and her family. That meant for a while, when I visited my grandparents, I also got to visit both of my great-grandmothers, too. Here's a photo of both of them — Nora Ellen Kendall Williams on the left and Mahala Susan Hall Wilson on the right.

  • Minta F. Caudill (my first cousin three times removed on my mother's side), b. 1895 in Rowan County, Ky.; d. uncertain.

Dec. 14

Sanford P. Caudill, (my 3G uncle), b. 1874 in Rowan County, Ky.; d. Nov. 20, 1909 in Rowan County, Ky. I'm not sure how he died, but he perished just short of his 35th birthday.
