Family-tree birthdays this week: (Much) younger second wife of noted country doctor

Birthdays from my family tree for the week of Aug. 17:

Aug. 17

Dana Carol Trent, (my second cousin on my mother's side). Happy birthday, Dana. Hope you have a great day.

Aug. 18

Millard Lambert, (my second cousin twice removed on my father's side and my fourth cousin twice removed on my mother's side) b. 1908 in Elliott County, Ky.; d. Sept. 27, 1913, in Elliott County, Ky. Millard was the son of Edward "Edd" Lambert and his first wife, Pearl Belle Lowe Lambert. I do not know the cause of his death, which occured at age 5. Millard is a double relative. I have Lamberts on both sides of my family — Edd was an uncle of my paternal grandmother, and one of her second cousins married Malissa Jane Stidham, who is a first cousin on my mother's side.

Emily Margarite Humphreys Wilson, (wife of Kenneth Earl Wilson, my second cousin twice removed on my mother's side) b. 1923 in Mount Sterling, Montgomery County, Ky.; d. July 6, 2013, in Kettering, Montgomery County, Ohio. Emily was roughly the age of my maternal grandmother, but I don't ever meeting her and am not sure any of my immediate relatives did, either. She married a grandson of Michael Clay Wilson, brother of my maternal 2G grandfather Abijiah Wilson, and lived a few counties over from where my grandmother grew up.

James George Lambert, (my first cousin twice removed on my mother's side) b. 1927 in Rowan County, Ky.; d. Nov. 19, 1982, in Michigan. James' mother, Laura Etta Hall (her first and middle names were usually pronounced as one, "Loretta"), was a sister of one of my maternal great-grandmothers, Mahala Susan Hall Wilson. Laura Etta married William Lambert (1901-1892), who was born in Rowan County and could be related to the Lamberts on my father's side. However, if that's the case, I've not established the connection.

Joyce Lorraine Ray, (my wife Deborah Renee Ray's aunt on her father's side). Happy birthday, Aunt Joyce. Hope you have a great day.

Aug. 19

Manerva E. Cox Lambert, (my 3G aunt-in-law on my mother's side) b. 1842 in Morgan County, Ky.; d. Jan. 30, 1937, in Morehead, Rowan County, Ky. Manerva was married twice — she is related to me because she wed Elias Lambert after the death of her first husband, Thomas Brown, in 1875. Manerva and Elias had two children together, including Ephraim Lambert, whose son married the Malissa Jane Lambert referred to in the birthday entry for Millard Lambert. Manerva lived in various times in Morgan, Elliott and Rowan counties — the third of which had not yet been formed when Manerva was born.

Virginia Lee Crawford Wilson, (my 3G aunt-in-law on my mother's side) b. 1882 in Leon, Carter County, Ky.; d. Oct. 9, 1970, in Morehead, Rowan County, Ky. Virginia was the second — and much younger — wife of Dr. Jeremiah Wilson, a brother of my 2G grandfather Abijiah Wilson. "Doc Jerry" was a well-known physician in Rowan County (and one of the few there at the turn of the century). A street in downtown Morehead is named for him. Jeremiah had 13 children by his first wife, Anna Eliza Halley Wilson. Among their children were the great adult-literacy crusader Cora Wilson Stewart, and Bunyan Spratt Wilson, a lawyer and Morehead's first mayor.

Virginia was younger than eight of those children, including both of the aforementioned. I'm not sure if this was considered scandalous, but judging from the prevalence of such marriages throughout my family tree, I suspect it was not entirely unsusual for a widower to take a younger second wife. In this case, Virginia was younger by 30 years. Virginia had two more children by Jeremiah and survived him by 53 years.

Aug. 20

Christine Kidd Jennings, (my third cousin, third cousin once removed and fifth cousin once removed on my father's side) b. 1937 in Rowan County, Ky.; d. Oct. 4, 2010, in Lexington, Fayette County, Ky. Our most direct common ancestor was Edmund Kidd Sr., who was 2G grandfather to both of us. Her father, Davis William Kidd, married a Lambert, just like my grandfather did. Myrtle Mae Lambert was a second cousin of my paternal grandmother, Lenore Lambert Kidd. Christine also married Nelson Jennings, whose various family members are related by blood and marriage on both sides of my family.

Aug. 21

Perry Arthur Hall, (my 2G uncle on my mother's side) b. 1898 in Rowan County, Ky.; d. March 3, 1977, in Shelby, Richland County, Ohio. Perry was the brother of one of my maternal great grandmothers, Mahala Susan Hall. (He also was the brother of Laura Etta Hall, who is mentioned in the birthday entry for James George Lambert.) He married Hessie Ray Lewis, who possibly is related to me, as well. The mother of my other maternal grandmother, Nora Kendall Williams, was a Lewis, as was the mother of my paternal grandfather.

Aug. 22

Timothy Charles Gartin, (my second cousin on my mother's side) b. 1969 in Springfield, Clark County, Ohio; d. Oct. 28, 2012, in Wake Village, Texas. "Timmy," as I knew him, was born almost exactly two months after me. Our mothers were first cousins, and we both lived in Springfield, Ohio, so Timmy and I were pretty good buddies for a while. However, I think I only saw him once after my family moved to South Carolina in 1976, near the end of my first-grade year.

Timmy was employed with Olan Mills Photograhy and as a security guard in Springfield. I'm not sure how he wound up in Texas, but his mother moved there after she and Timmy's father divorced.

I know Timmy was not always in the best of health. Like others in my family, including my Aunt Vada Louise Wilson Caudill, he had juvenile-onset diabetes. I'm not sure if it contributed to his death, as it did Vada's.

Adam Raymond Wilson, (my cousin on my mother's side). Happy birthday, Adam. Hope it's a great one.

Aug. 23

Robert Dale Kidd, (my third cousin, second cousin once removed and third cousin once removed on my father's side) b. 1950 in Breathitt County, Ky.; d. Aug. 24, 1950 in Breathitt County, Ky. Robert was the son of Virgil Linard Kidd and Thelma Riddle Kidd. Virgil was a first cousin of my paternal grandfather, Elmer Kidd, and his mother was a Stidham, related to me on my mother's side.
